Now this is a story about how my life got turned upside down. Born and raised in a city you never heard of. On the city streets is where I spent most of my days. Always was drawn to sports and anything competitive. Played youth sports and football into high school. Dropped that and picked up skateboarding; staying competitive I made home videos and went to local competitions until several knee injuries took me out. One doctor even told me I’d never run correctly again (he didn’t know me very well). After high school I had some years of questionable decisions and focused on the wrong things in life. I kept a small amount of fitness in my routine, mainly curls and… curls. Around 2011, I started to get back into shape and making better choices for my future but that competition was still missing. Then one night, long behold, reruns on ESPN of the 2012 CrossFit Games. I was enamored from the moment I first saw it. How could I not have known about this, where have I been, what have I been doing? Running, gymnastics, jumping, heavy weights, and YES! no shirts required! Quick google search and bam, I was in a park trying my first free WOD. It DESTROYED me, getting beat by a smaller guy and wanting to puke every minute of it. That was it, I was hooked. I dropped all my bad habits and jumped face first. Fast forward a few years I’ve learned so much as an athlete and person. I went back and forth about whether to get more involved and with the support of my wife and the CFV psychologist I decided to get certified and use my knowledge and his mentor-ship to help others change their lives too. CrossFit has done more for me than I let on, it has changed who I am, most certainly for the better. If I can bring to one person what CrossFit has brought to me, than I’d say that’s a success I didn’t have yesterday.
